Gegia Bronzini: a woman enchanted by the art of hand weaving
From Venice to Como, the journey of the Antiqua Ars Nova
In 1929, fascinated by the skill of a Venetian peasant girl, Gegia Bronzini asked her husband to buy her a loom because she wanted to weave. From the same peasant girl she learns the secrets of the warp and the rhythm of the threads. And from that moment on, Mrs. Bronzini experimented with the combination of colours, she knew the different fabrics and their perfect joints. Her entrepreneurial path begins as a small weaving school, then the business grows, develops a creative identity and becomes a production laboratory for furnishing fabrics. The spirit and energy of the young Gegia Bronzini led to the opening of the first shop "Gegia Bronzini handmade art fabrics" in Piazza San Marco in Venice: it is 1937. This was followed by the opening of the first shop in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo (1939). The war did not stop Gegia Bronzini's passion for textiles, who has been participating in the Triennale di Milano and Selettive del Mobile with her exclusive furniture projects since the 1950s. From coloured geometries to the use of gold, to the whole range of greys, violets and greens. "Antiqua ars nova" is the name that tells the story of the precious handmade yarns, according to the ancient textile tradition, on the contemporary and snappy designs by Gegia Bronzini. The creative sensibility of the founder continues through her daughter Marisa in the new headquarters in Cantù, reinventing herself without stopping until 2007. Today Gegia Bronzini is part of Tessile Officina and is located in Bregnano, in the province of Como. The wooden looms, handmade, are still the fundamental part of the exclusive production of fabrics. Together with tradition, silk, metallic yarns, leather strips and semi-precious stones are woven. Just as the enterprising woman in love with fabrics, Gegia Bronzini, would have wanted.
